Resume Summary Vs. Objective Statement Which One Wins Interviews
Resume Summary Vs. Objective Statement Which One Wins Interviews Spread the loveThere is a valuable piece of real estate on your resume, directly below your name and contact information. People want to know what they should put therea resume objective or a resume summary? Its a great question. The answer is nearly always the same: a resume summary. You should almost always use a summary on your resume as it provides more value and opportunity to tell the hiring manager why youre a great fit for the position. The once-common objective statement used to be included on virtually all resumes, but has largely been cast aside as summary statements and so-called âbranding statementsâ have become more popular.Still, some resume creators continue to use the objective within their resumes. Weâll discuss why you would want to avoid the objective and go for a resume summary instead. What is a resume objective? The resume objective is a brief and concise statement used to provide potential employers with an outline of your career goals. It essentially says to the employer, âHereâs who I am. This is what Iâm looking for to help me in my career path. If you can provide these things, Iâm willing to work for you.âThese statements were once common in resumes, and would include language like this:I am interested in stable employment with long-term advancement prospects, competitive salary, great benefits, and bonus opportunities in an environment that meets my unique personality and interpersonal skills.Put simply, this is a statement that essentially declares to the employer what youâre looking for when it comes to a job and a career path. If you think about that for a second, itâs very clear that this approach is of questionable value in todayâs employer-centric marketplace. Why you shouldnât use an objective statementDo I need a resume objective statement? No, here is the reason why:The resume objective statement is an old-fashioned relic from a time when employers hired employees for what often turned out to be a lifetim e career with the company.Back then, companies wanted to know that you intended to remain in that job for decades to come. To determine that commitment, they expected to read and hear career outlines that matched their company culture. If you wanted long-term employment and they provided it, that was a positive.Todayâs employment environment is entirely different. Today, the emphasis is on the companyâs needs rather than the employeeâs career path. Most employees end up moving from job to job almost as routinely as high school boys switch girlfriends! That time-honored partnership between employer and employee has given way to a new paradigm in which both sides of the labor divide pursue their own immediate interests rather than their long-term needs â" and that has changed everything when it comes to using resume objective statements.Check out this Forbes article for more on what not to include on a resume. What an objective statement would look like todayGiven that new employ ment paradigm, it is clear that yesterdayâs brand of objective statement has entirely the wrong focus. It is focused on the applicantâs needs, and pays little attention to what the company needs from any new employees. After all, there is no need to tell an employer that youâre looking for employment in a company like theirs â" they can understand that from the fact that youâve applied with their firm.To fit todayâs employer-focused hiring process, an objective statement would need to be targeted more toward what the employer needs. That would require that you:Demonstrate that your career path is in alignment with what the company needs.Clearly identify yourself as someone tailor-made for the job.Convince the employer that you are looking to accomplish exactly what the company needs done. The resume objective vs the summary If those three goals above seem familiar, youve already started thinking about the new resume objective. Itâs actually similar to another resume elem ent that weâre quite fond of around here: the resume summary. To better understand the old, traditional objective statement, it can be helpful to compare it to the new and improved resume summary.Remember how the objective statement focuses on your desires and needs? It outlines your envisioned career path, and how you think that the employerâs company can help you reach those goals. It declares the type of salary, benefits, and work environment that youâre looking for. Itâs basically a âthis is who I am; take it or leave itâ proposal. In contrast, the summary takes the opposite approach. It provides a condensed summation of all the most relevant things that you bring to the table for the employer. It details your qualifications, your positive attributes, and your accomplishments. Rather than focusing on your own wants and needs, it outlines the ways in which you can help the employers accomplish their desires.Which one should you use?Any honest assessment of the differenc es between an objective and summary statement must be made with the understanding that employers are interested in their own needs. As a result of that focus, the old-style objective statement is grossly inferior when compared to a well-written resume summary. The fact is that the summary offers a more concise and flexible way to let a prospective employer know that youâre the right candidate for the job. It focuses on the companyâs needs, highlights core competencies and special skills that can provide real value to the employer, and offers an opportunity to quickly capture a recruiterâs interest to improve the odds that youâll get that all-important interview.Check out our post on how to write a great summary with examples. How does a resume summary help with the ATS?Thereâs another reason to stress the importance of the summary as opposed to the objective statement: high-tech Applicant Tracking Systems have little use for the resume objective. These scans are used to sor t through resumes, and they tend to prefer resumes that use summaries rather than objectives.Your resumes first goal must be to make it past ATS screening so that you can get that interview with a real human. It is all but imperative that you use the option that will best accomplish that goal. How To Use Your Fear To Build Your Self Esteem - Work It Daily
How To Use Your Fear To Build Your Self Esteem - Work It Daily Success Tweet: Act. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Thatâs the definition of courage, and a great way to build your self esteem. I subscribe to Sharon Melnickâs online newsletter. In a recent post, she made several interesting points about confidence. Confidence with help you be flexible. You will consider all alternatives and options. Confidence will help you follow through on ideas that you might otherwise talk yourself out of. Confidence will help you be persistent â" and hold on you your vision for your life. Sheâs right. Confidence is the foundation of all success. Without it, you will have a difficult time succeeding. To build your self confidence, you have to be optimistic, face your fears and surround yourself with positive people. Fear is a great confidence and success killer. âA Message to Garcia,â written by Elbert Hubbard, is one of the best essays on personal responsibility ever written. Hubbard has some great things to say about facing your fears. âThe greatest mistake you can make is continually fearing that you will make one.â Read that again. Those 14 words are powerful! They are some fundamental career advice. If you let your fear of making a mistake stop you from taking action, you will never take any action and your fear will ruin your life and any chance of creating the career success you want and deserve. In 1988 I was ready to start my career success coach and speaking business. I was afraid. I was worried that I wouldnât succeed. I had always worked for large companies. I wasnât sure I knew exactly what to do to run a successful career success coach business. Nevertheless, I looked my fear in the eye, quit my job and moved forward. Twenty-two years later, Iâm still at it. My fears were unfounded â" but they were real. Iâm glad I faced them and acted. Fear is persistent. It doesnât go away. It will wait for one of your weak moments and then it will strike. If you let it get the best of you, youâll never move forward. Fear most often manifests itself in procrastination. When I find myself procrastinating, I always ask myself, âWhat are you afraid of here, Bud?â Identifying what I fear always help me defeat it. Once I identify what I am afraid of, I can take positive steps to move forward through my fear and on to success. Make a list of your doubts and fears. Decide what you can do to overcome them. Then act. Take at least one positive action â" not matter how small -- every day to overcome your doubts and fears. Even if these actions donât work out as well as you hope, you will be on the road to overcoming your fears and creating the life and career success you want and deserve. Remember procrastination feeds fear; and action cures it. The choice is up to you. I choose action. My best career advice says you should too. The common sense career success coach point here is simple. Successful people are self confident. Self confident people donât let their fears get in the way of their success. They follow the career advice in Tweet 47 in Success Tweets, âAct. Feel the fear and do it anyways. Thatâs the definition of courage, and a great way to build your self confidence.â Identify your fears, and then do what you need to do to move past them. Action is the great antidote to fear. It puts inertia on your side. Once you are moving forward, you are likely to continue moving forward. Itâs the first step that is the hardest â" and scariest. If you want to beat your fears, you need to take the first step -- act, and then keep on going. 4 Signs Youre an Empath And How to Manage Your High EQ at Work
4 Signs Youre an Empath And How to Manage Your High EQ at Work When it comes to partieality types, most people know how to define and identify a narcissist. However, the polar opposite personality popularly known as an empath is a bit trickier to pin down.Psychiatrist Dr. Judith Orloff defines an empath as a person who feels and absorbs other peoples emotions and/or physical symptoms because of their high sensitivities. They filter the world through their intuition and have a difficult time intellectualizing their feelings. If this sounds like you, you may be familiar with the challenges associated with an empathic personality in the workplace. To help you navigate your professional path, weve identified 4 personality traits common among empaths, and provided tips for how to handle them in the workplace.1. You require alone time.Empaths develop strong emotional connections to others and experience high levels of sensitivity to their surroundings. As a result, many individuals with this personality type require time on their own to decompress and center their focus and attention. As Psychology Today puts itAs super-responders, empaths find being around people can be draining, so they periodically need time alone to recharge. Even a brief escape prevents emotional overload. For example, empaths like to take their own cars when they go places so they can leave when they please.Of course, this need for alone time can present problems in a collaborative office environment. If your professional life involves frequent teamwork and constant exposure to the thoughts, feelings, and reactions of others, practicing self-care when youre off the clock becomes a crucial element to a balanced existence. When you arrive home, schedule time for yourself to enjoy your own company, whether that be through a warm bubble bath, a meditation session, or just a hour to sit by yourself with a good book. If you find yourself in serious need of solitude during the work day (but you work in an shared office or an open-plan space), try booking a conference room or auxiliary office for an hour to give you a brief stretch of solo work time.2. You go above and beyond to help others.Because empaths feel keenly invested in the wellbeing of others, they frequently offer their assistance whenever possible. And sometimes, that results in emotion overload. According to Dr. Orloff, empaths are big-hearted people and try to relieve the pain of others. A homeless person holding a cardboard sign, Im hungry at a busy intersection a hurt child a distraught friend. Its natural to want to reach out to them, ease their pain. But empaths dont stop there. Instead, they take it on. Suddenly theyre the one feeling drained or upset when they felt fine before. In a work environment, this personality trait can manifest in a lack of boundary-setting. Your colleague needs help with a major and time-consuming project, and although your agenda is already full, you volunteer to relieve her burden . Ultimately, you find yourself lacking the time and energy to fully commit to any of your projects, culminating in subpar performance and personal exhaustion. The best way to avoid this outcome involves asserting your boundaries and viewing your work responsibilities through a realistic lens. If you have the time and ability to help a coworker, feel free to dive in. But if youre already dealing with a heavy load of your own, just be honest and graciously decline. If possible, you can ease your dissent by suggesting anotlageher solution, like the name of a coworker with similar skills and a lighter workload who might be able to help.3. You have strong powers of intuition.Among the greatest strengths in the empaths arsenal is her ability to evaluate situations and navigate interactions using the power of intuition. This talent for reading between the lines can serve an empath well in the workplace. Because an empath quickly picks up on signals about her coworkers potential reactions, she can present her ideas in a way thats specifically phrased to appeal to the supervisor or colleague in question. At the same time, empaths must ensure that their intuitive responses are anchored in facts. If you pitch a project strategy to your boss with my intuition tells me that this is the right move as your key argument, that wont do much to fortify your bosss confidence. Yes, allow your intuition to guide you. But once you arrive at an idea, back it up with concrete and information-based evidence.4. Youre highly sensitive. As their name suggests, empaths feel emotions on a heightened scale, and they frequently find themselves swept up in the feelings-based journeys of others. Huffington Post explains it like thisEmpaths are naturally giving, spiritually open, and good listeners. If you want heart, empaths have got it. Through thick and thin, theyre there for you. Theyre world-class nurturers. But they can easily have their feelings hurt. Empaths are often told that they are t oo sensitive and need to toughen up.While too sensitive is a derogatory (and, to be honest, heavily gendered) term, empaths do need to learn how to channel their natural sensitivity in a way that makes sense for the workplace. Its not personal, its business gets thrown around rather carelessly in pop culture and career-related parlance, but empaths can draw some useful advice from that old chestnut. If an interaction with a coworker affects you negatively, direct communication often proves helpful. Keep work-based conversations clear and project-related, and if a colleague genuinely crosses a line, either address it with her face-to-face or, depending on the severity, mention the encounter to her supervisor.
