Most Stanford students fail this challenge. What we can learn from them

Most Stanford students fail this challenge. What we can learn from themMost Stanford students fail this challenge. What we can learn from themYoure a student in a Stanford class on entrepreneurship.Your professorwalks into the room, breaks the class into different teams, and gives each team five dollars in funding. Your goal is to make as much money as possible within two hours and then give a three-minute presentation to the class about what you achieved. If youre a student in the class, what would you do?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreTypical answers range from using the five dollars to buy start-up materials for a makeshift car wash or lemonade stand, to buying a lottery ticket or putting the five dollars on red at the roulette table. But the teams that follow these typical paths tend to bring up the rear in the class. The teams that make the most money dont use the five dollar s at all. They realize the five dollars is a distracting, and essentially worthless, resource. So they ignore it. Instead, they go back tofirst principlesand start from scratch. They reframe the schwierigkeit more broadly as What can we do to make money if we start with absolutely nothing? One particularly successful team ended up making reservations at popular local restaurants and then selling the reservation times to those who wanted to skip the wait. These students generated an impressive few hundred dollars in just two hours. But the team that made the most money approached the problem differently. They realized that both the $5 fundingandthe 2-hour period werent the most valuable assets at their disposal. Rather, the most valuable resource was the three-minute presentation time they had in front of a captivated Stanford class. They sold their three-minute slot to a company interested in recruiting Stanford students and walked away with $650.The five-dollar challenge illustrates the difference between tactics and strategy. Although the terms are often used interchangeably, they refer to different concepts. A strategy is a plan for achieving an objective. Tactics, in contrast, are the actions you undertake to implement the strategy. The Stanford students who bombed the $5 challenge fixated on a tactic - how to use the five dollars - and lost sight of the strategy. If we focus too closely on the tactic, we become dependent on it. Tactics without strategy, as Sun Tzu wrote in theArt of War, are the noise before defeat.Just because a $5 bill is sitting in front of you doesnt mean its the right tool for the job. Tools, as Neil Gaiman reminds us, can be the subtlest of traps. When were blinded by tools, we stop seeing other possibilities in the peripheries. Its only when you zoom out and determine the broader strategy that you can walk away from a flawed tactic. What is the $5 tactic in your own life? How can you ignore it and find the 2-hour window? Or even bett er, how do you find the most valuable three minutes in your arsenal?Once you move from the what to the why - once you frame the problem broadly in terms of what youre trying to do instead of your favored solution - youll discover other possibilities lurking in plain sight.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. 5 Principles for Innovation in Mobile Recruiting

5 Principles for Innovation in Mobile Recruiting5 Principles for Innovation in Mobile RecruitingTechnologists practice innovation every day. The many years I have spent working in technology- in angeschlossen measurement, search advertising, and now online recruiting advertising- have exposed the many amazing things that can be built when people think about the gap between what currently exists and what could exist. The consideration of user behavior, user needs, technology limitations, and technology potential all work together in driving the creation of products that serve both users and customers. The digital world is going through a seismic shift as user behavior shifts from desktop and laptop computers to mobile devices. Data from comScore shows that 51 percent of US users time spent on a digital device in mid-2013 occurred on a tablet or smartphone. Every business type with an online presence has seen this shift occurring since the dawn of the mobile web on the Palm to the rise o f iOS and Android, and job seeking as a category has not been immune to unterstellung changes. More than 30 percent of besucherzahlen to Simply Hired comes from mobile devices, and we expect it to grow to 50 percent by 2015.Online recruiting though, has been slow to adapt to this shift in job seeker behavior. ATS limitations and the difficulty of storing a resume on a mobile device have made it difficult for both the employer and the job seeker to meet the requirements when applying to jobs online. In a study conducted by Simply Hired in 2012, 70 percent of respondents said they use mobile technology to search for jobs, and 86 percent said they would apply for jobs through mobile devices if they could. Yet only 36 percent of Fortune 500 companies examined by iMomentous in late 2013 had a mobile career section on their site, and five percent had the ability to apply through a mobile device. Clearly there is a gap between what job seekers expect and what employers currently offer. To h elp close this gap, employers can apply these key principles of technology development in order to succeed in the new multi-platform digital landscape.Principle 1 IterationImplementing new technology solutions, such as a mobile-friendly career site or updating an ATS,is a big decision for most companies. Buttechnology innovators know the principles of iteration start with what you have and make small adjustments as you move forward. For instance, LinkedIn looks quite different than it did five years ago, but its hard to point to a single moment where it changed. While some products are built entirely from scratch, most technology products are built by iterating on top of what is already there, and they evolve over time.Recruiting functions can use the saatkorn principle to guide their adoption of mobile-friendly solutions by evaluating what they have and what small steps they can take to attract candidates on the go. For instance, before migrating an entire website to mobile, a compa ny can migrate the careers section of its site to mobile. Or it can opt to advertise jobs on mobile and host the pages on the mobile advertiser site in order not to deter candidates. By expanding on top of the available capabilities, employers learn what works and what doesnt. Also, this process can expand their mobile presence at a pace that works for them.Principle 2 Know Your AudienceTechnologists continually evaluate how people use existing features, and listen to users in order to uncover unmet needs. At Simply Hired, we regularly look at job seeker behavior to learn how we can better meet their needs. A recent study resulted in findings that can help dispel some of the myths about the mobile job seekerMobile job seeking is universal mobile job seekers are similar to desktop-only job seekers when it comes to the types of searches they make and the categories of jobs they visit.Mobile job seekers are highly engaged They spend mora time looking at jobs, view more job listings, an d are more likely to visit jobs more than once as they switch devices to apply.Mobile job seekers are eager to apply online in a recent survey, 70 percent of job seekers said they would apply on mobile if the technology had been available. While high-level statistics such as these can help influence your strategy, its important to also know your specific audience and their concerns based on your location, the job type, as well as the current employment environment.Principle 3 SegmentationPart of knowing your audience is also knowing how their needs differ depending on factors inherent to the segment. For instance, Google created Google Scholar to address the needs of academics, who are required to cite only published works and include detailed citation information in their research.Likewise, employers may need to segment recruiting efforts by job type. When building out mobile application processes, medical jobs that require license information may require a slightly longer mobile app lication process than administrative positions. Truckers are another group with special user needs because they are on the go and likely wont take the time to apply from their phones, some trucking companies include a phone number on mobile ads and take application information over the phone.Principle 4 ExperimentationWe can all point to technology failures. Anyone remember the Apple Newton or Google Wave? Though these products were failures, they resulted in learning that was likely used as Apple and Google developed subsequent products. For every failure, we can easily point to experiments that became great products, such as Google News or even Facebook.Employers can consider piloting mobile functionality to specific types of candidates. They can also set aside a portion of their budget to advertise jobs on mobile, and try out mobile application features offered by job advertising sites before building their own. Without a budget for experimentation, employers will miss out on new opportunities to reach qualified candidates who are eager to apply.Principle 5 Measure PerformanceWithout measurement, its impossible to know whether an experiment succeeds or fails. The best technologists put metrics in place prior to any launch, and closely monitor performance against goals.Number of applicants, cost per hire, and time to hire are the typical metrics used by recruiters. But measurement can be even more granular and offer greater insight into performance. When experimenting with mobile advertising on job search aggregators, like Simply Hired, employers have the ability to compare number of clicks and cost per click (CPC) across desktop and mobile to determine the value of their investment. A low number of clicks on mobile could indicate a job is not relevant to mobile candidates or that the CPC is too low. A job that receives a high number of clicks but not many applications could indicate that the job description is too long or that the application process is too complicated.Innovation is a Necessity in the Digital AgeIf more than half of all digital time spent online is already occurring on mobile devices, how are you going to keep up when half of all job seeking activity is on mobile? By using the principles of innovation that technologists use every day, employers in every industry can make improvements to better serve job seekers in the new digital landscape.Read Related ArticlesFour Surprising Truths about Mobile Recruiting5 Quick Fixes for Mobile-Friendly RecruitingFour essential steps for comprehensive mobile recruiting

After retirement, older Americans are dying nearly broke

After retirement, older Americans are dying nearly brokeAfter retirement, older Americans are dying nearly brokeThe thinking goes that we work hard now so that we canone day enjoy the fruit of our labors in retirement. But too many Americans are living their final years without a financial safety net.A 2012 National Bureau of Economic Research study found that about 46% of U.S. senior citizens have $10,000 or less in financial assets when they die. That percentage rises to 57% if the seniors live alone. As Washington Post critic William McPherson wrote about his own descent into poverty in his retirement, If youre poor, what might have been a minor annoyance, or even a major inconvenience, becomes something of a disaster. Your hard drive crashes? Whos going to pay for the recovery of its data, not to mention the new computer? For McPherson, he became poor through health problems and by acting like one of those people who win the lottery and squander it on houses, cars, family, and Cari bbean cruises. But I hadnt won the lottery Id fallen under the spell of magical thinking. Like for many Americans, his magical thinking caught up with him in his retirement in his essay, McPherson described the everyday humiliations of being broke and elderly I am glad that none of my friends has ever found himself sitting on a bench in a park with a quarter in his pocket, as I once did, and nothing in the bank. McPherson died this past March at age 84.Two major reasons senior citizens are dying brokeThere are two dovetailing factors keeping older Americans from financial security they arent saving money, and they have high debt. These two are relatedbut when youre no longer part of the full-time workforce, money becomes scarce. Social Security and part-time jobs rarely fill the hole for living expenses, so the margin for financial error gets razor-thin. Even with Medicare, just one unexpected medical bill can throw a senior citizens whole world into crisis.Adults are already bad at saving- 69% of adults reported in 2016 that they had less than $1,000 in savings.Seniors are not only broke, theyre in debt. Accumulating credit card debt is one of the all-too-easy ways seniorsfall into a financial hole they cant get out of.Seniors aged 65 to 69 have $6,876 in credit card debt on average. Even the American demographic group with the least debt, seniors aged 75 and above, mucksmuschenstill have$5,638 in credit card debt. For vulnerable Americans like senior citizens who may not have the physical capacity to take on side jobs or other work, these debts can landseem unsurmountable. In these cases, the so-called golden days of U.S. citizens lives are filled with financial stress and dread.3 ways to avoid dying brokeWhile the situation is unlikely to improve for current senior citizens, those still in the workforce have time to plan ahead. It may seem like a while away, but its important to build an emergency fund now for rainy days in the future. The sooner, the better. T hat means taking a hard look at your finances, so you can see where the money is pouring in and slipping out of.Look at your finances realistically The Penny Hoarder recommends making an income and expense report after you subtract your fixed expenses like rent, see what remains.Examine what you really want to spend your money on Its easy for money to just flow out of our pockets (and bank accounts) without vigilance. We can get caught up in luxury spending even if were not making luxury money. To avoid this, bring intention to your financial plan. Figure out your personal goals for your budget Do you want to retire early? Do you want to travel? Do you want to pay off your student loans before you hit 50? Its well-known that experiences (and freedom) are what give us lasting memories and feel like the best use of our money. Put as much money as you can towards those, and cut the amount youre spending on things that give you only fleeting happiness. Every dollar you spend is a vote f or the life you want if you spend $5 on your coffee or $10 on your lunch every day, thats fine as long as you see it as 5 votes towards caffeine, or 10 votes toward food that you will forget about in a few hours. Imagine if those votes went to your vacation fund instead. As The Penny Hoarder notes, if you align your spending and saving to your own goals, then you will live your ideal life (at least financially).Make lifestyle changes to match your spending to your goals As part of your financial plan,USA Today recommends making small lifestyle adjustments like scaling back on eating out - and if those dont work, youll need to consider bigger adjustments like moving to a less expensive city orselling your car. And dont be tempted with not paying off credit cards- their interest charges can be just as terrible as the interest on your loans. This is hard, unsexy work, but its better to do this now when youre a working adult who can handle extra shifts and physical and personal sacrifice s. Once youre in retirement, the chances of you building up a financial cushion are slim to none.

What an ex-car thief can teach about finding your life passion

What an ex-car thief can teach about finding your life passionWhat an ex-car thief can teach about finding your life passionChris Guillebeau is a New York Times bestselling author and the host of Side Hustle School, a daily podcast with mora than 2 million downloads per month. During a lifetime of self-employment and side hustling, he visited all 193 countries of the world before his 35th birthday. He recently sat down with Srinivas Rao on the Unmistakable Creative podcast to discuss what we should all be looking for in a fulfilling, meaningful line of work.Srini I dont imagine that everybody wakes up one day and says, You know, my goal is to visit every country in the world. What led you down that trajectory?Chris People always think that there are these big, strategic visions. Like, when I was 10 years old, I wanted to grow up and be an explorer, and then I prepared for the next 15 years. None of that was the case. I knew I had a love for travel. I had a mom who was married to a mi litary guy, my stepdad, and he took us to a bunch of different places because of his assignments. I lived in the Philippines for a while, and I got comfortable with some cross-cultural stuff.Looking back, I landsee a bunch of random stuff, which eventually worked together to create this focus that I have now. Its a series of stages and interlinked pieces, along with many dead ends, but eventually it builds to something.Srini Lets talk about the dead ends, and moments that didnt really work out. What have you learned from those?Chris I had lots of little businesses that never worked- I had this idea for a golf membership site that costs one dollar. I was thinking it was the greatest idea, because there are so many golfers out there, and I just needed 1% of them to pay one dollar. Somebody said to me, Its going to be hard to have a business model where your most expensive product is one dollar. And I was like No, its going to be great And of course, it wasnt. It was a total flop.I did a lot of things like that that were super random. I would spend a little bit of time on these things, a little bit of money. Then if it didnt work out, Id just move on to something else.Srini Why do you think so many people hit a dead end, and then dont do anything else?Chris Maybe theyre afraid to quit. Maybe theyre like, Ive already invested in this, Ive got sunk costs, Ive spent some time doing this. I think people fail to back out of those dead ends and pursue something different not when theyre terrible at it, but when theyre just okay at it. Its hard to back away from the dead ends when its working out okay, but not amazing. But I think theres a real skill in being able to say, Its not amazing, therefore Im going to try something else. Its a series of stages and interlinked pieces, along with many dead ends, but eventually it builds to something.Srini How do you balance the ability to do that with the longevity thats required to achieve mastery at a particular craft?Chris I do nt think everybody has to worry about mastery so much, at least for a while. The mastery comes when you find something that you truly do love, and youre actually pretty good at it, whether its a natural gift or something thats developed. But a lot of people dont know that yet. A lot of people are trying to figure it out. Dont beat yourself up over failing to pursue mastery if youre not sure what youre supposed to master.Srini I think part of it is letting go of attachments that we have to these things. Its like you said, sunk costs can be really insidious if were not careful.Chris Of course. Its like youre in the grocery store and you picked the wrong line to be in with your cart of groceries, and this new line opens up. Its going to be so much faster, but youre afraid to leave, because youve already waited 10 minutes, and if you just wait a few more minutes, you might be at the front of the line. Its very hard to give up and go do something else. I feel like that affects lots of pe oples decisions in life. Sunk costs are sunk costs - theyre gone. You cant recoup them. You have to always think about the present moment and think about what youre working toward in the future.Srini When it comes to a ten-year quest around the world, do you think everyone has the mindset for something that significant? What can they do to learn it?Chris Experiment, try different things, learn broadly, take on different skills, do things that youre a little bit uncomfortable with. Be clear about your motivations, check in on your feelings How does this make me feel? What do I want? It doesnt necessarily mean youre always going to respond according to how you feel, because if youre running a marathon, you might not feel that great at mile 23, but if its something you believe in, youre going to keep going. Its helpful to do those gut checks, and to always be working towards something, to always be challenging yourself. I think its a dangerous place to be in, especially as a creative, when you ask yourself, How am I being challenged? and you dont have a good answer for that. Thats a warning sign that maybe you need something different.Srini For sure. Youve said you were a juvenile delinquent for a while. Id love to hear about that in more detail.Chris Well, I thought I would be a good criminal at the age of 13. I had a small shoplifting ring for a while, and when I say shoplifting ring, it was me, my friend, and my friends sister. We would steal things, and I thought I was really good at it, but the thing with long-term crime is that you can get away with it 20 times in a row, but if you get caught the 21st time It only takes once, you know? That didnt work out super great, and then I learned to drive by stealing a car. That was at age 14, and it also didnt work out. My friend and I successfully stole the car and drove it around all night, so we thought we were awesome, but then as the sun rose, we were like, What do we do with this car? We decided to park it som ewhere, but ran into a brick mailbox. Somebody called the police, the police showed up, and I was arrested. There was a series of bad choices that happened over three to four years. Finally, I came to my senses and realized thats probably not the best life path for me.Srini What are the lessons in human behavior and personal relationships from that time that later played a role in the way youve run your business and your life?Chris I guess there was an element of creativity to it, a desire to say, Is there more than one way to do this? At the time, it was like, Oh, I want the new Metallica cassette. I dont want to pay for it. Therefore, Im going to steal it. That thinking evolved and I stopped stealing things, but throughout college, entrepreneurship, travel, blogging, et cetera, I was always asking, Is there another way to do this? For sure, that was part of it.Srini The theme that I keep hearing is one of resourcefulness.Chris I guess I always wanted to try something new. If somet hing failed, I wouldnt necessarily try the saatkorn thing again, just like I stopped stealing cars after the bad experience at age 14. But yeah, I guess I would always try to find another approach or do something different. Im focused on the goal, even if I have to change the strategy, which I think is a wonderful thing that entrepreneurs, or artists, or anybody else can do.Srini Fair enough. Lets shift gears, and get into the framework of the book, and this whole idea that were born to do certain things, and we can find what those things are.Chris I run into a lot of people who say things like, Oh, I love what I do. Its the best job in the world - I would do it for free I feel like Ive won the career lottery. What do these people have in common? Did they always know what they wanted to do, or was it more of a non-linear journey? Did they do a lot of different stuff like I did?One thing I learned is that theres a lot of people working entrepreneurially within a larger company or or ganization, because thats the kind of work they want to do, or because theyre a better fit in that kind of environment. I tried to unpack the lessons and the experiences of those people, then present them in a way thats not just anecdotal, but actually prescriptive for everybody out there who is trying to find the work theyre meant to do, whether its just one ultimate path or more than one path.Srini One of the things it said on the back of the book was finding this intersection of joy, money, and flow. Lets talk about those three things in more detail.Chris What I found through my research is that people are different- we all want different kinds of work. But joy, money, and flow are essentially things that I think everybody wants. Everyone wants to do something that they love, or at least that they enjoy. Thats where joy comes in. Money is that sustainable piece. Im writing about careers, not hobbies, so if theres something you love to do that doesnt make money, thats fine, but th ats not your income-producing work. Then flow is developed skill, or that point at which we lose ourselves in our work. Hours go by because were so good at it.So the intersection of those three things, that convergence point of joy, money, and flow, is essentially the goal. Whenever you come across a career decision, whether big or small, ask yourself about these points. Does it meet all three of these things? If Im deciding between two things, which is the closer fit?At different times in our life, we may have to make compromises, and thats fine. For a while you might work a job that you dont necessarily love because it pays well, and it provides for something else. Thats totally fine. But I think winning that career lottery is something that has all three of those things.Srini Why do we often miss or overlook those points of intersection when they happen? That convergence point of joy, money, and flow is essentially the goal.Chris I dont think anyone teaches us to be aware of them. So check in with your feelings, and then combining the feelings check with a more objective, research-based check where were like Okay, am I really good at this thing? Does it produce the kind of income that I would like? Putting those things together is really important.Srini You said that nobody teaches us these things. Given that you have a masters degree, what is your perspective on education?Chris Fortunately, I think education is changing, at least in terms of recognizing that there is more than one path- like working for yourself. Ive worked for myself my entire adult life - Im 37 now. When I was in my early 20s, it was kind of a weird thing. There were plenty of other people doing business online even then, but I didnt really know any of them. They were scattered everywhere, and my parents didnt really understand what I did for a living. But now its much more common to work for yourself. With education, its now much more common to pursue a different path, and have that be totally okay.I dont regret any of the education I had. I think it was very helpful, teaching me to write well, to formulate arguments, maybe teaching me some social skills that I didnt get during my juvenile delinquent years. But it clearly didnt really prepare me for a specific career track- at least not in line with the investment that I made in it.Srini I have one last question What do you think it is that makes somebody or something unmistakable?Chris The willingness to find the thing that they were born to do. Theres this thing out there that you have to find, and maybe its a calling, maybe its a life quest, maybe its a business, maybe its an artistic expression, maybe its something that I havent mentioned at all. But there is this thing out there, and to be unmistakable, you keep forging your way toward it. And you dont necessarily even know what it is in the beginning, just like I certainly didnt know where I was going with my life back when I stealing cars - or even as an a dult. But you keep working toward it, and you back out of those dead ends that we talked about. You find another way forward. You try, try again, but you dont try the same thing necessarily. Youre unmistakable because you keep working toward that, and you do everything you can to find it.This conversation has been edited and condensed. These programs match keywords and accomplishments in resumes with the criteria the hiring managers are looking for. However, simply stuffing your resume with non-grammatical keywords can backfire, according to James Brian of Monster.com, as quoted by CNN. He says that Monsters software detects keyword bombing, where applicants frontload their resumes with keywords designed to beat the program.Even if you dont have to beat ATS software, keywords are still a good way to catch the eye of a hir ing manager. In the six seconds they look at your resume, those keywords will jump out at them.
